Weekly Religious Education Classes

"Whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me."  Matthew 18:5

Religious Education for Pre-School (age 3) through Grade 8

Traditional religious education classes for three-year-olds through 8th grade are held from mid-September through April or early May. These weekly classes are offered on the following days and times:

Day of the week Time Grades
Sunday mornings 10:15 - 11:30 a.m. Pre-K through Grade 2
Monday evenings 7:00 - 8:15 p.m. Grades 3 - 8 and RCIC
Sunday afternoons
in Spanish
12:00 - 1:15 p.m. Grades K - 4 and RCIC

Our ministry uses the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies faith formation program which focuses on the Sunday scripture readings, shares what our Church teaches and believes, and fosters family involvement and Mass participation. Each year, faith topics such as prayer, sacraments, Jesus, morality, saints, and more are reviewed and taught more deeply on a grade-appropriate level. Our catechists and classroom assistants are STAND-certified parishioners who volunteer their time and efforts to share the Catholic faith with our parish children.

The middle school program (grades 7 - 8) also provides discussions, presentations, and times for sharing prayer, food, and socialization in addition to the weekly Catholic instruction.

Sacramental Preparation

Children prepare for and receive the sacraments of Penance and Eucharist for the first time during their 2nd grade year of religion classes. Please see the information for First Penance and First Eucharist for further details.

Children's Catechumenate (RCIC)

Children in grade 3 and above who have not yet received the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Penance, and/or Eucharist) are placed in the Children's Catechumenate (RCIC) program. The class meets on Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. A class on Sundays is also available for students who speak Spanish. Like the adult RCIA program, the RCIC program prepares children for the sacraments of initiation and gives them instruction about the Catholic faith. Children in the RCIC class become full members of the Church at a special First Communion Mass the week after Easter.

Special Needs Instruction

If your child has a special learning need (severe dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder, learning challenges, etc.), please contact the Religious Education office to see how we can help you. Generally, home-based instruction or parent presence in the classroom is the preferred method for such cases. A special needs instructor is sometimes available. Contact Sister Cecilia to discuss your child's particular need.

Much assistance from our families is needed to create an excellent catechesis program for the young children of Sacred Heart Parish. We are blessed to have enthusiastic volunteers who are dedicated to being the church as they work to make our parish active and vibrant. Would you consider ministering to our children in religious education as a catechist or classroom assistant? Working with children in religious education is extremely rewarding; we promise you will receive much more than you give!
