Scripture Readings March 21, 2010
Is 43:16-21, Phil 3:8-14, Jn 8:1-11
To the exiles in Babylon, Isaiah foretells a new exodus (1), when the Lord will lead his people from captivity to freedom (Ps). True freedom is rooted in the person of Jesus, not in observance of the Law (2). It is he who challenges us to examine our own hearts before self-righteously judging others (3).
For reflection: When have you noticed yourself standing on the pedestal of social and moral superiority? How did you adjust?
From the Pastor’s Desk
The water main break of this past week has certainly had an effect on our daily routines. Shortened weekend liturgies, cancellation of school and religious education classes, the postponing of our Annual Spaghetti Dinner, and the numerous meetings that will have to be rescheduled have all changed our world dramatically. How much we rely upon water for the daily necessities of life; how we suffer without it!
Beyond the frustration and annoyance of a condition over which we have no control, the Lenten Journey we are taking also asks us to deal with the uncomfortable – often within ourselves. The frustration with “old ways of living”, our own brokenness, can give way to the new possibility of refreshment. How good it is to have that glass of cold wateror hot water for a shower – things we often take for granted. How good it is when we do not take for granted the goodness of God, and rather allow the water of God’s grace to quench our spiritual thirst and renew our lives. Continue steadfast in the journey of faith!

BAOBAB BLAST: God’s Great Get-Together
What is a Baobab? A baobab is a gigantic tree found in Africa that creates its own ecosystem, and is one of the world’s oldest life forms. A baobab tree’s hollowed-out trunk, leaves, foliage, nectar, fruit, and bark provide basic life needs for many different creatures. The baobab tree serves as a meeting place for many people to gather, discuss, and share stories. BAOBAB BLAST VBS 2010 is an open invitation to be a part of God’s Great Get-Together. Set under the impressive baobab tree, kids will have the opportunity to hear God’s Word, be amazed at God’s wildlife creations, and be a part of a supportive community. This will be a life-changing experience for all kids (ages 3 through grade 4) when they gather together as a community and grow in faith.
During VBS 2010, kids will explore connections with God, family, friends, and others around the world. All the fun will begin Monday, June 21 and run through Friday, June 25 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. Check the church bulletin for registration information and plan to have your child “sit under the impressive baobab tree!” Many adult volunteers are needed to assist us in planning, leading, and supporting this awesome adventure for our parish children. Please consider helping us. To volunteer, telephone Sister Cecilia at 410-833-8515 or e-mail Jeff at jment@shgparish.org.

St. Vincent de Paul Society
The St. Vincent de Paul Society will meet on Monday, March 15th at 7:00 PM in the Adult Meeting Room 221.
St. Vincent de Paul
As one of our Lenten activities, St. Vincent de Paul will again sponsor Easter Giving Trees for collection of specific nutritious, non-perishable foods and Food Lion gift cards for our sister-parish in Appalachia. Because of poverty and unemployment, many people seek help from the St. Therese Neighborhood Aid Program. Whereas food pantries in our area have access to the Maryland Food Bank, are recipients of food drives by churches, scouts and businesses, and receive generous support from local grocery stores, St Therese is without such resources, and they really need our help. Food Lion gift cards enable the volunteers who run Neighbors Aid to restock the shelves with essential items when donated food runs out.
Please take one or more eggs from the tree, purchase, and return the items placing them in designated boxes in the Gathering Area or outside the side entrance to the church near the Music Room.
Food Lion Gift Cards: Sacred Heart School’s Scrip Program will have gift cards available after weekend Masses in Room 105. All you need to do is fill out an order form for “SVDP” Food Lion in the amount of your donation, and your donation will be collected and given to St. Therese. Gift cards not purchased through the Scrip Program may be placed in an envelope marked “SVDP” and handed in with the offertory collection. Items for St. Therese will be collected: March 13-14, and March 20-21.
